What is CircuitMess?

CircuitMess is a startup from Croatia founded by by Albert Gajšak and Tomislav Car. In 2017 they launched a successful kickstarter campaign for “MAKERbuino“. Later they have launched another kickstarter campaign for “MAKERphone“, also very successful.

Recently CircuitMess has launched yet another campaign for “CircuitMess STEM Box“. Let’s see what they have in store for us this time.

STEM Box

STEM Box by CircuitMess is a subscription based STEM education package aimed at students and adults. To inculcate the knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Every three months, you’ll get a new product based on a different topic delivered at your doorstep. Here’s a peek at what the box has to offer:

STEM Box #1: Spencer

Build & code your own voice assistant. Spencer is a DIY voice assistant that talks, lights-up, connects to the internet, and understands simple voice commands.

Some out-of-the-box things Spencer can do as soon as you assemble him:

  • Reads the news 
  • Set an Alarm or reminder
  • Tells the weather forecast
  • Memorize the things you say
  • Tell the upcoming calendar meetings

STEM Box #2: Jay-D

Build & code your own DJ mixtable. With Jay-D, you’ll learn how microcomputers and other electronic components are used for sound production.

This mini mixtable has almost all the basic functions a professional has, such as:

  • A display 
  • BPM control
  •  20 RGB LEDs 
  • Different sound equalizers
  • Two simultaneous playback slots
  • A Class-D amplifier, and two 3W speakers

STEM Box #3: Wheelson

A robot car that will show you how autonomous vehicles work. This tiny wheeled robot has a camera and a microcomputer and can be programmed to autonomously to navigate a small road while driving just like an autonomous car.

It has built-in Bluetooth and WiFi it also has an LCD display where you can see what the robot sees.

What you can do with it:

  • Code Wheelson to drive autonomously using its camera
  • Make it recognize QR codes on the floor and flash the built-in RGBs accordingly
  • Take photos and save them to the SD card, on a mobile phone, or on the internet
  • Connect it to the internet and interface it with other IoT devices.

STEM Box #4: ByteBoi

Build & code your own retro game console.This device is an open-source retro game console that can be assembled and programmed. ByteBoi can be coded in MakeCode Arcade. It can even be used for remote controlling the Wheelson because of the built-in Wi-Fi chipset.

What you can do with it:

  • Play pre-made games
  • Connect it to the internet
  • Make your own video game
  • Share your creations with a community of game makers

STEM Box #5: Chatter

Build & code your own encrypted wireless communicator. Chatter is a free, private, security-first texting device. This device does not need a cellular network or a SIM card to work because it creates its own wireless network and communicates with other Chatter devices.

What you can do with it:

  • Send text messages for free
  • Code a jumping dinosaur game
  • Play the pre-loaded snake game
  • Load custom emojis and memes on the device

STEM Box #6: Clockstar

Build & code your own smartwatch. Clockstar is equipped with a dual-core ESP32 microcomputer and has Bluetooth low energy and Wi-Fi. It connects to the phone using a mobile app and can mirror the smartphone’s notifications to its 128×128 TFT color display. It also comes equipped with a gyroscope, accelerometer, and a magnetometer

What you can do with it:

  • Check the time
  • Play the built-in Tetris game
  • Control the media app on the phone
  • Code the watch to count the number of steps
  • Connect it to smartphone and mirrors notifications 
  • Connect the watch to the internet and interface it with other IoT products such as Spencer or Wheelson
